Like every designer, Habit Designers operate under constraints. Triggers are where all habits start, and picking the right one is often the biggest challenge in designing a new habit. In “Where Habits Come From” I explained that a habit is a behavior that has been paired to a trigger using reinforcement. But when every perception could potentially trigger a habit, how can a designer ensure that their habit is the one that’s triggered? It starts with picking the right trigger. Here, I’ll discuss three types of trigger: external, internal, and synthetic. These each have different strengths and weaknesses, and each can be used to design great behaviors that form lasting habits. Let’s look more closely at each type of trigger. External Triggers — Triggers All Around When most people think of triggers, then think of external triggers. The sight of a TV remote, the sound of police sirens, or the smell of fresh baked cookies are all external triggers. Anything in a user’s environment can be an external trigger, and each can be paired to trigger a particular behavior. For example, when some people smell cigarette smoke, it triggers the behavior of smoking. Mobile app engagement is often driven by external triggers. Users open Waze (behavior) when they get in the car (trigger). Yelp wants you to open it (behavior) when you’re out looking for dinner (trigger). Is there a behavior already attached to your target trigger? If so, do you need to replace that behavior or can you use “behavior chaining” (more on this later) to build upon it? If you can detect when users are exposed to the target trigger, can you use a synthetic trigger (see below) to smooth them in to a habit? Internal Triggers — Triggers in Your Head Internal triggers (sometimes called ‘Endogenous Triggers’) are things that users sense inside their selves; their feelings or thoughts. These can be things like hunger, remembering that your favorite bakery is nearby, boredom, thinking about the taste of cinnamon, anxiety, thinking of someone you used to go out drinking with. Unlike external triggers, these are ‘inner’ events that are private to a person’s brain. They have the same power as external triggers to initiate behavioral habits — and Behavior Designers find some particular internal triggers highly attractive to pair their product with. Example: The Internal Trigger of Boredom Example: Yo-yo Dieting: Internal Triggers Gone Awry Synthetic Triggers — Triggers Made by You Synthetic triggers are triggers that have been intentionally constructed by you, the Behavior Designer, to trigger a particular behavior. These triggers are special because you have control over when, where, and how users experience them. Triggers created by other designers cannot be treated like synthetic triggers because you can’t control them (the other designer does). But the design of synthetic triggers is not restricted to advertising! The dramatic increase in smartphone usage and the omnipresence of mobile technology provides Behavior Designers with a new powerful set of tools for designing and implementing synthetic triggers for their users. The always-on web connections of mobile devices and the emergence of ‘push’-based web services are a powerful way to remotely (and dynamically) present synthetic triggers to users and prompt certain behaviors. Notifications are easy to send, the hard part is sending the right ones at the right time. If you send a user a notification and they don’t perform the target behavior, then the ling between the trigger and the behavior is now weaker. If you objective is long-term behavior change, then you need to eventually transition users off of synthetic triggers. If a user stops using your app, and the notifications go away, so will the habit. If you transition a user on to an external or internal trigger, then their new habit will outlast the app. Trigger Happy has it's way of how we reaction on many different levels......so what you pull on to make your lifestyle change.
How to be lucky - Most of us think that luck just happens (or doesn’t) but everyone can learn to look for the unexpected and find serendipity as a tool to use to open up your mindset. Human beings find comfort in certainty. We form governments, make calendars, and create organisations; and we structure our activities, strategies and plans around these constructs. These routines give us the satisfaction of knowing that, by having a plan, there’s a means of it coming to fruition. But there’s another force, constantly at play in life, that often makes the greatest difference to our futures: the ‘unexpected’ or the ‘unforeseen’. If you think about it, you already look out for the unexpected every day, but perhaps only as a defence mechanism. For example, whenever you use a pedestrian crossing on a busy road, you look out for the unexpected driver who might race through the red light. That ‘alertness’ to, or awareness of, the unexpected is at the centre of understanding the science of (smart) luck and exploiting it to your benefit. You might think of serendipity as passive luck that just happens to you, when actually it’s an active process of spotting and connecting the dots. It is about seeing bridges where others see gaps, and then taking initiative and action(s) to create smart luck. Serendipity is a guiding force in great scientific discoveries but it’s also present in our everyday lives, in the smallest of moments as well as the greatest life-changing events. It’s how we often ‘unexpectedly’ find love, a co-founder, a new job, or a business partner – and it’s how inventions such as Post-it Notes, X-rays, penicillin, microwaves and many other innovations came about. My research suggests that serendipity has three core characteristics. It starts with a serendipity trigger – the moment when you encounter something unusual or unexpected. Next, you need to connect the dots – that is, observe the trigger and link it to something seemingly unrelated, thus realising the potential value within the chance event (sometimes referred to as a Eureka moment). Finally, sagacity and tenacity are required to follow through and create an unexpected positive outcome. While a particular chance encounter is an event, serendipity is a multifaceted process, as the figure below shows (note that the trigger and connecting the dots often happen at the same time). Cultivate your serendipity mindset As well as challenging your innate biases and making a conscious effort to think beyond your usual models or fixed ways of thinking, there are many more practical steps you can take to help develop or strengthen your serendipity muscle. Here are four. Together, they’ll help you identify the clutter in your life, clean it up and create space for serendipity; forge more connections; and see opportunity in crisis. Carve out ‘me time’. Serendipity is a process. It’s an opportunity to turn chance into good fortune through your own efforts, which doesn’t always happen in a flash. It often requires an incubation period. Be patient, knowing that some of your efforts could result in an immediate spark while others will be more like planting seeds, for which the fruits of your labour will pleasantly surprise you in the future. In the interim, respecting your time every day is a critically important habit. Making a schedule for yourself – and protecting your ‘me time’ – will give you space to manage your focus, interests and creative energies. Treat this time like a business meeting with yourself. Block it out in your calendar and use it to create, write or envelope yourself in an area that excites you. Employ daily serendipity practices. There are simple tools that can further help you notice, maximise and exploit serendipity in your daily life. For example, there’s the ‘serendipity hook strategy’ (whenever you meet someone new, cast a few hooks – concrete examples of your current interests, hobbies and vocation, thus maximising the chance you and the other person will latch on to common ground and shared passions, triggering serendipity). Similarly, you could practise asking questions differently (eg, ‘What are you most interested in at the moment?’ instead of ‘What do you do?’), which will again maximise the opportunity for serendipitous connection. Simply speaking, micro bubbles are just very small bubbles. To qualify as “micro”, a bubble must, in fact, be less than a 1000 micrometers in size.<br /><br />However, to be effective for deep cleaning of skin, the bubbles should be less than 25 micrometers in size and larger than. Hello....March is when the tide is coming in... are you frequently exhausted and overwhelmed after interacting with others? You may be inadvertently absorbing the energy of those around you. Sometimes, it may be hard for you to figure out which emotions are yours and which ones belong to someone else. If this sounds familiar, you may be feeding off other people’s energy. Be very careful when you use your energy this shifting of energy is coming in strong so get yourself ground, people are ready to spring off to either a strong start or you will might be pulled back from other people wants and needs which the tide will set you back in not get you the WAVE for yourself........ Mirror neurons kick in to gear in our prefrontal cortex, our area of the brain that also controls things like morality and planning around consequences. They encourage us to imitate others and are more active in the brains of HSPs. Create boundaries You may find it helpful to set appropriate boundaries with others. The trick isn’t necessarily to stop feeling, but to be very intentional in creating boundaries that prevent you from owning those emotions as your own. By allowing others to own their emotions, it doesn’t become too overwhelming for you. It also supports a healthy relationship dynamic. Boundaries can come in many forms. These include: saying no reducing the frequency of social interactions setting a time limit on visits keeping certain topics off limits If you’re an HSP, visualization may help too. You could imagine being surrounded by a bubble or other impenetrable force during intense interactions. You can also visualize their emotions going through and down into the ground, rather than sticking to you. Establish your baseline When you’re in your own space, try checking in with how you feel and tuning into your own baseline. Awareness may help you differentiate between what’s yours and what’s not. I have my clients check their baseline emotions, then notice if that baseline shifts or changes when another person enters the room. If so, notice how your baseline changed. Are you more agitated, sad, or anxious? These can all be signs that you’re picking up on someone else’s energy. Determine what’s yours Once you’re able to identify a shift from your baseline, you can ask yourself: Is this feeling mine, or someone else’s? “If the emotion is yours, then process your feelings, If it’s not your emotion, then you can let it go, simply by stating to yourself: This isn’t mine. I don’t have to take this on.” Practice grounding activities There are many activities and lifestyle habits that may help you feel rooted and connected to an inner sense of calm. These include: mindfulness and meditation yoga slow living minimalism somatic experiencing Ritualize separation After social interactions, consider creating a ritual to help put some space between you and what you may have picked up. For example, you can take a shower after an activity with large crowds. You could also use your hands to “scoop” emotions out of your heart and push them away from you. Some may find it helpful to burn some sage or palo Santo. Consider committing to those rituals you feel work for you. Spend time in nature You may find it helpful to recalibrate your senses in nature, taking a break from interactions. Try taking a walk in a nearby park, spending some time watching waves move in and out, or putting your feet on the earth in the forest. Make time for self-care Besides finding a quiet place to retreat and process your experience, try journaling about your emotions or taking a warm shower or bath to reset your nerves. Self-care can be whatever feels good to you (of course), but use it in a way that you feel cleansed of the experience of taking on another’s emotional experience. Hey Gang - It's all about February and when the rising of the earth from the Snow Moon we are now entering into a rising of the energy. When this happens we need to make sure that we are aligned into the ground and fine tune ourselves to be balance. Bringing Alignment In the yogic sciences, we observed that certain types of body positions will support certain activities the best. Or in other words, what is known as Hatha Yoga, the physical postures, is about manipulating the body in such a way that you reach a certain geometric perfection. Your geometry becomes aligned with the larger geometry of creation, so that you are always in sync – you are never off. How balanced you are, how clearly you see things, and how well you do things simply depends on how in sync you are. Whether you are in sync with the people, trees, life or just space around you will decide how smooth and friction-free your function is in the world. There is something called Siddhasana. There are many aspects to it. One simple aspect is, there is a point on the left heel that today the medical sciences are calling “Achilles”. You heard of the man? You put your Achilles to your Muladhara, or the perineum in your body. If these two things touch, many aspects are cleared out in you. Your thoughts are clear, your emotions are out, and there is a very clear perception of what is happening around you. When you sit with the point of the Achilles in touch with your Muladhara, there is a balance such that you do not take any sides. You have heard that Achilles was killed because an arrow was shot through his heel. Do you believe someone will die because they got hurt in the heel? But Achilles died that way. And there is another person who died that way in India, way before him – Krishna. This is trying to tell you that they were killed in an expert way, not just by slitting the throat or breaking the head. Just by putting a point at the Achilles – they had to die. There is a certain energy system in the body. When you sit with the point of the Achilles in touch with your Muladhara, there is a balance such that you do not take any sides. There is, of course, a distance between possibility and reality. Some will have the courage and commitment to travel that distance, and some will not. But every life is a possibility. If you want to keep that possibility open, you never ever form an opinion of any sort on anyone. Good, bad, ugly – you do not form these opinions; you simply look at them right now. How they are in this moment is all that matters to me. How you were yesterday is not my business. How you may be tomorrow, let us see. Tomorrow must be created, not concretized right now. Getting the Right Geometry This is a certain geometry of the body. Right now, the Western cultures are going about propagating, “Yoga is a stretching exercise. Instead of that, you can do Pilates, boxing, tennis...” If you just want to be fit, go run somewhere, climb a mountain, play tennis, or do something else. Yoga is not about fitness. Fitness is just one consequence. The important thing is to get the right geometry of life because the physical universe is all geometry. Whether a building will fall on our heads today or stand for a long time essentially depends on how geometrically perfect it is. The same goes for the body, for the planetary system, for the universe, and for everything. Planet Earth is going around the Sun not because a steel cable is attached to it, but because of perfection of geometry. If a little geometric imperfection happens it is gone forever, and that is true with you also. If you go off your fundamental geometry, you are gone. It is very important that at an early age, you do the right things to bring the right sense of geometry. Then you will become competent to go through life. Those people who are thinking that only good things should happen to them are obviously unfit for life because if you do not know how to go through harsh situations joyfully, then you will avoid all possibilities. You will avoid all the great possibilities of life simply because you want to avoid a little bit of difficulty. Only when you are geometrically in a certain state of congruence, then you are willing to go through any situation, no matter what it is. How to Use Mudras to Regulate the Five Elements of Your Body<br />Many cultures from around the world, including those based in China, Japan, India, and elsewhere, believe the Universe is comprised of specific elements. You are likely familiar with the four most common elements of earth, air, fire, and water. Some traditions, including Indian philosophy, Hinduism and Buddhism, add ether or space as the fifth element. According to these groups, humans are tasked with keeping these elements in alignment in the Universe, on earth, and within ourselves.<br /><br />Earth, or bhumi in Sanskrit, corresponds to anything solid. For instance, in your body earth elements include skin, bone,hair, teeth and organs.<br /><br />Air, or pavan in Sanskrit, is believed to be the highest of all the elements. Within the body, your breath is the air element.<br /><br />Fire, or agni in Sanskrit, serves as a source of warmth. The heat from our breath and other parts of our body correspond to this element.<br /><br />Water, or jala in Sanskrit, is critical to the survival of all living things and as such is one of the most important elements to keep in balance. All of the liquids in our bodies stem from this element.<br /><br />The great unifier of the elements is Ether, known as aakash in Sanskrit. Ether is thought to bring the other four elements together and allow them to prosper.<br /><br />It is thought by some that the imbalance of these elements on Earth can cause natural disasters from drought to earthquakes to wildfires. Similarly, the belief is that if these elements are misaligned within a human body, this can lead to disease and other ailments. For the treatment of imbalance within oneself, performing specific mudras are often recommended.<br /><br />What are Mudras?<br />From the Sanskrit word mudra, mudras are symbolic hand gestures used in Hindu or Buddhist religious ceremonies and in the practice of yoga. Occasionally these gestures are done with the whole body, but more often they are focused on the hand. While I will be focusing on the mudras from the Buddhist and Hindu religions, you can find mudras in almost every culture. They can be found in meditation, yoga, the hand gestures in ethnic dancing – think Indian or Flamenco or even the Hawaiian HULA! <br /><br />The Basics of Mudras and the Five Elements<br />Mudras for the earth element will include your ring finger<br />Mudras for the air element will incorporate your index finger<br />Mudras for the fire element will include your thumb<br />Mudras for the water element will incorporate your pinky or little finger<br />Mudras for the ether element will focus on your middle finger<br /><br />The practice of mudras is meditation with specific hand movements. For those of you that struggle with meditation, this practice is a good gateway into more formal meditation. You sit relatively still and allow our mind to slow, but you can keep your mind somewhat active as your focus on the hand gestures. This is especially good for mudras that have your alternate between different positions. If you already have a regular meditation practice, you may already be using a mudra and not realize it. For instance, if you meditate by sitting in a cross legged position with your thumb and index finger connected so they form a zero and your other fingers extended and your hands placed palms-up on your thighs, then you are performing a classic Chin Mudra. This mudra focuses on your breathing. By sitting and holding your hands in this way you are activating your diaphragm and creating a healthy flow of oxygen in and out of your body.<br /><br />Mudra for Balancing Energy<br />A good place to start when diving into mudras for element alignment is this mudra for balancing energy. It incorporates each of the five elements by including each finger in the process.<br /><br />If you are feeling “off” and are looking for a quick fix that you can do from anywhere, this is it. You can even take five minutes at your desk to perform this mudras during the day or take a few minutes before going to bed at night.<br /><br />It is a set of four mudras or hand gestures. First, on both hands simultaneously, touch the tips of your thumb and index finger together and hold for approximately five seconds. Then, move your thumb to your middle finger and hold that connection. Continue to your ring finger and lastly your pinky. Can You Keep It Together During Crazy Times? These are difficult times for everyone, everywhere. The rules keep changing every day, and most of our daily routines that keep us grounded have been tossed out the window.<br /><br />Mindfulness meditation is the practice of nonjudgmental, intentional awareness of the present. It can strengthen areas of your brain responsible for memory, learning, attention and self-awareness.<br /><br />The practice can also help calm down your sympathetic nervous system.<br />Over time, mindfulness meditation can increase cognition, memory and attention.<br />It can also decrease emotional reactivity, stress, anxiety and depression.<br /><br />Nowadays, it feels like people praise meditation as a cure for anything that ails you. Pain? Stress? Distraction? There’s a meditation for that. But what is actually happening in your brain when you meditate?<br /><br />“Mindfulness meditation is the very intentional awareness of the present moment in a nonjudgmental fashion,” he says. “It’s simple but not easy.” <br /><br />How do you practice mindfulness meditation?In mindfulness meditation, you focus on a specific thing, oftentimes your breath, and try to bring your attention to that anchor.<br />“You can do it anywhere or anytime,”. “There isn’t a hard and fast protocol to follow and you don’t need to spend 300 hours to be trained in how to do it.”<br /><br />To practice this meditation, all you need is to find a comfortable position and start to bring your attention to your breath. If it’s helpful, you can also do a scan of your body (bring attention to each part of your body moving from your feet up to your head) to notice any sensations and release any tension you are feeling. <br /><br />While the goal is to focus on your breath, notes that your thoughts will wander, which is both OK and the natural activity of your mind. Simply notice — without judgement — the thoughts or feelings that come up, and then choose to bring your attention back to your anchor and that meditative state. <br /><br />What happens to your brain when you meditate?For an activity that narrows your focus to the present moment, there is a lot that’s happening in your brain. Meditation develops various regions of your brain. “The brain is a wonderfully plastic organ that responds to the activities that you do. The more you practice something, the more developed that region gets,” <br /><br />Your brain develops through neural connections. Neurons, the information processing cells in your brain, connect to make neural pathways, which are responsible for your thoughts, sensations, feelings and actions. When you repeatedly do an activity, you strengthen the neural connections involved, which develops the associated regions of your brain. <br /><br />For example, if you are a cab driver who constantly navigates different routes, then you are strengthening the neural connections that develop the spatial reasoning parts of your brain. This same process happens when you meditate. While research on mindfulness meditation is still in the early stages, some small, initial studies have found that over time mindfulness meditation may lead to increases in gray matter density in the hippocampus and other frontal regions of the brain as well as increases in anterior insula and cortical thickness. <br /><br />Increases in gray matter and the left hippocampus aid learning, cognition and memory, resulting in better retention of facts and more mindful behavior. And increases in the anterior insula and in cortical thickness benefit cognitive function, attention and self-awareness. <br /><br />It’s hard to accept some aspects of the present moment when they’re not pleasant,” he says. “To me, the number one benefit of mindfulness meditation is having a practice of disengaging with something that’s stressing you out.” <br /><br />By non judgmentally noticing what comes up for you during meditation and then letting it go, you are better able to avoid triggering your fight or flight response when something negative pops up in life. “There is some distance that gets inserted between the stimulus and your response. There’s a chance to notice your reaction, I start to get stressed or angry or worried, and then I think, ‘Is that how I want to respond?’<br /><br />The takeaway? Meditation is a practice, not a magic pill <br />While mindfulness meditation can cause incredible changes in your brain and outlook, this doesn’t happen overnight, and it isn’t a cure-all.<br /><br />Learning to let go of your expectations and simply experience meditation is hard — but it’s also largely the point. The more you practice being in the moment without judgement or expectations, the better you get at it. <br /><br />“You can’t go in expecting to experience enlightenment or to have a mystical experience,” “But people do find that at the end of even a 10- or 15-minute practice they feel more centered, calmed or relaxed. It’s great if that happens and it’s great if it doesn’t. Meditation for grief is a great way to stay focus and balance and it's okay to let go your feelings.<br /><br />Whatever kind of bereavement or grief you are experiencing, we can’t predict what thoughts, feelings, or sensations will arise at such an impossibly hard time. Maybe the huge sense of loss will leave us numb. Maybe the sadness will envelop us. Maybe we’ll feel waves of anger. Whatever arises, the pain will feel intense, and for a lot of us, we might even wonder if we’ll ever get through it and feel the same again.<br /><br />We all grieve in different ways. For some people, it passes quickly; for others, it takes a long time. The truth is that when we lose somebody we really care about, we never really move past it. The loss, the void, the hole they leave becomes part of our life. It becomes part — and a really important part — of our journey. We change and adapt to life without a particular person and eventually, we reach a point where we find a resting place in our hearts for the memories to reside; a place where we can learn to smile and be at peace with those memories.<br /><br />Obviously, meditation for grief and loss isn’t the be-all and end-all to help people navigate through grief. If you are really struggling, it’s advisable to reach out to a health professional, and, of course, lean on friends, family, or support groups. Whatever works best for you. Nothing can really hurry along the healing process; we all heal in our own time, so be gentle and patient with yourself. Healing — coming to a place of acceptance over the loss of a loved one — takes the time it takes, however short or long that might prove to be.<br /><br />You Are Not Alone<br />At whatever stage of the grieving process you are currently experiencing, you’ll know how tortuous the bombardment of thoughts, emotions, and memories can be. It might also feel like you are going through a unique sense of loss, but the thing about grief is that it’s a universal experience — everyone goes through it, to varying degrees, at different times of their life. It’s worth remembering that you are not alone in that regard, and we all emerge from the experience forever changed, in some way.<br /><br />Working towards acceptance<br />When we are grieving a loss, it’s normal to be in a state of disbelief or to feel a strong sense of anger and injustice. Whatever emotions arise, judging and/or suppressing those emotions only exacerbates them. But when we use meditation to sit with our entire being, we can embrace and process what is happening now. Acceptance does not mean forgiving, ignoring, or excusing what has happened. It simply means recognizing what has happened, processing it, and in time, finding that you are a stronger and different person because of it.<br /><br />Remember, every individual’s grief process will be different. Someone might suggest that “you should get over your sadness already,” or that “you’ve been grieving for long enough.” You don’t need to pay attention to these comments. Gently remind yourself that your journey is your own, and you will benefit immensely from taking the time you need to heal.<br /><br />What does grief look like?<br />Grief is the natural human response to loss. While the death of someone you love might bring on the most intense form of grief, painful loss can come in so many different forms, including (but not limited to): the loss of a partner through a breakup, the loss of a friendship, the loss of a job or financial stability, the loss of a pet, the loss of your health due to illness or injury, and the loss of a marriage.<br /><br />Each person’s grief process and healing journey is different. Emotions can range from shock, disbelief, anger, guilt, and irritation to loneliness, anxiety, despair, and sadness. And because our mind and body are inseparable, the physical symptoms associated with grief are very real. Meditation Monday and today do you feel you are lost in space or forgetting a lot of things? Well it's okay its only natural to feel this way when you are in the middle of a Full Moon along with Mercury Retrograde at a half way point. So anchor thyself and let the breathing of fresh air and go around where you feel ground within yourself!<br /><br />It's okay to start the NEW YEAR feeling this way and there is a lot of sequence of number and deja vu is starting to happen to help you wondering and guessing just let it flow and in take that positive vibes!<br /><br />Meditation is about having an empty mind and staying still. If you ask my mother, she would say that's not possible. But the more I studied, the more I realised, meditation is not about being still and serious, it's about being present, being conscious and being open to what comes next. Whatever it might be. Just welcoming everything.
